In Santa Cruz County, there are both Licensed Midwives (LM) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) who offer homebirth. A homebirth midwife is a trained birth professional who provides primary care for low-risk women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Prenatal care visits are often an hour or more. Homebirth midwives are generally on-call for their own clients, attend women in active labor, and remain throughout the birth and the first hours postpartum. Postpartum care continues with two or more home visits in the first week and a six-week office visit. Each midwife sets her own schedule, which may include additional postpartum visits.
